Paisley Grammar Event: Pre-Application Proposals

On 25th September, NIXON shared its development proposals for the existing site at Paisley Grammar School, Glasgow Road.
Members of the public viewed the development proposals with a number of members asking for the plans to be displayed online.

Introduction:

In 2019, The Education & Children’s Services Board concluded that the existing Paisley Grammar School on Glasgow Road, Paisley was no longer fit for purpose. After various consultations, the recommendation from Education Scotland and the local community was that a new school should be provided.

Subsequently; Renfrewshire Council have prepared a Development Brief with a view to establishing the best solution for retaining and redeveloping the existing Category B Listed Main Building.

As such; Nixon Ltd. have been commissioned by Nixon Holdings Ltd. to produce a feasibility design for the potential redevelopment of the existing Paisley Grammar School site on Glasgow Road, Paisley.

Existing Category B Building and Contextual Photos:

Summary:

  • Development responds to and respects existing site context.
  • Blocks will become marker buildings for the area with the Main Listed Building as the centre piece.
  • Site now opens up to McKerrell Street on the West and Crossflat Crescent on the South & East – Site becomes more functional and accessible to all residents.
  • Sense of place is achieved through a combination of pedestrian footpaths, strategic planting and well-lit spaces around and between the proposed buildings.
  • Existing Category B Listed building becomes focal points for the development
  • Communal facilities are provided in the form of private spaces such as seating throughout the site, a social paved area through the central amenity spaces as well as enhanced public outdoor adventure play space to the North West corner of the site.
  • Habitat will be enhanced through the provision of varied planting throughout.

The existing site features present several opportunities to create a unique scheme that is responsive to the site and overall context; preserving and enhancing many of the site’s existing physical features which in turn, help to link the site into the adjacent areas of open space and built form, providing a strong sense of place and character.

The proposals respond to the needs and aspirations of future residents and provides a design solution of high quality and adaptability within the context of its unique setting.

The next follow up consultation event will be at Paisley Grammar Secondary School on 23rd October on between 18:00 and 21:00.
