Harrison joins internship programme

Quantity Surveying Glasgow

Meet Harrison.

We’re delighted to welcome our very own Harrison to NIXON aka the Risk Taker. You’ll need to read on to find out more…

Harrison has joined our internship programme as our latest graduates move on to full-time positions.

Harrison is a brilliant 3rd-year Glasgow Caledonian University student, currently studying Quantity Surveying.

Welcome to NIXON.

Why Quantity Surveying?

It was an off the cuff decision – my best friend and I were looking for courses and our friend suggested QS. We Google it, spoke to our advisors at school, and just we went for it. Now we’re both studying at GCU and living in the city.

What’s the last year been like for you?

I’ve not been on campus for over a year but what’s good about the programme is that we have the option of finding a workplace opportunity for the summer and the next term. Coming to NIXON means I get real hands-on experience.

What does a Quantity Surveyor do?

There’s so much to it – managing the pricing on a building project from start to finish – but it’s one of the reasons that I am here is to learn exactly what’s involved in being a QS. Everyone always asks me what a QS does. I’ll get a definition down by the end of the summer – a one-liner – but it’s only been 3 days so I will get back to you on that.

How are you finding work life?

It’s all so new time and different to university. I really like chatting with people and clients and getting out on site. This week is the first time I’ve ever been on a construction site and it makes what I’m learning at university feel real. There are some things that I’ve seen on paper but there’s nothing like experiencing it in person.

Tell us something that we at NIXON wouldn’t know about you?

There’s nothing to tell really?”

Really, there’s always something?

Ok, well I was in some TV adverts when I was young for some games etc..

Let’s see then?

We can confirm that Harrison lives up to his name and, yes, he was the Risk Taker in the Logo Billionaire board game and made some other cameos in his short career before joining us at NIXON.

What do you hope to learn as an intern?

There’s so much to learn outside of the classroom and I’m hoping to get that hands on experience here in the city. NIXON seems vibrant, young, edgy and I’m looking forward to the experience and my first job in the industry.
